The legendary SR-71 Blackbird spy plane was, and still is, the world's only operational Mach 3 aircraft, and was designed, built, and tested by Lockheed's famed "Skunk Works." This new book covers all fifty Blackbirds built, from the first flight in 1962, to the last in 1999. As a replacement for the venerable U-2 spyplane, Lockheed went from contract signing to first flight in only thirty-two months starting in April 1958―from the beginning of design studies to the signing of a contract from the CIA to build the initial batch of A-12s in February 1960, to first flight in 1962. From the A-1 design through the completion of the very first Radar Cross Section models of the A-12, to the testing of every major system and subsystem, this book describes and illustrates the SR-71 as never before, using images from a variety of sources, as well as the author's own superb, new photography.

  • An excellent photo album on the SR-71 and its family.
Yes, text is minimal, but what is printed is enough to tell you what you're seeing. There is a lot of unpublished photos.
    The assembly pictures are great.
The section on the D-21 was excellent.
Listing each type of the SR family by tail number, with representative photos is great. USAF and NASA.
Disposition of each aircraft is nice to have. Every photo in this album belongs there.
Liked the format of the book. The cover, great.
I've known James Goodall since the 80's. Even back then he was a go to encyclopedia on all things Blackbird.
He is a terrific person. And a darn good photographer, too. His photo / slide archive is awesome!

This is a must have book if the SR-71, if remarkable bird interests you.
It joins my SR-71 library along with Col. Richard H. Graham and Paul Crickmore's books on this subject.

    Excellent work, Jim!

  • Fantastic job on the Blackbird, and if James gets a hold of me I have a picture of some tail art he doesn't have in his book.

Acquired from a crew chief on the SR-71B. From the early 70's
  • Best collection of SR-71 images from development through operations and into retirement. Many images I have never seen before. Worth the price for an SR-71 fan.
  • I don't know how Jim Goodall got access to many photographs that we considered secret during this program. The book has the most comprehensive collection of photos in one place concerning the Blackbirds. Great publication.
  • If you like reading about the SR71byou will like this book. More pictures then i have evrrvseen.
  • Lots of excellent and new (to me, anyway) photos, and bits of history on many or all of the fleet of Blackbird derivatives.
  • Great, since this book is loaded with pictures I’ve never seen from “behind the scenes” of the manufacture of this incredible machine.
