Out of the Clouds The Unlikely Horseman and the Unwanted Colt Who Conquered the Sport of Kings Linda Carroll David Rosner 9780316432221 Books Reviews

  • I have been aware of Stymie and his trainer, Hirsch Jacobs, since I first became interested in Thoroughbreds, some 50 years ago. However, this is the first in-depth study of both the horse and his remarkable trainer I have ever seen. It is long overdue; the stories of each are fascinating, and together make a compelling and thoroughly enjoyable read. The book is full of period detail and characters, giving a bright glimpse into a bygone era. The only complaint I have is that there were only a few pages of photos- there was so much more I wish I could have seen!
  • Thank you for this wonderful remembrance of a great time in my life. This painting is of my father, Conn McCreary, sitting on Stymie.
  • I want to say that I initially gave this book a review with only 3 stars; that was because I thought it took too long for the author to begin to discuss the central character in this amazing story-- the horse Stymie However, having read the entire book now I want to thank Linda Carroll and David Rosner for bringing Stymie back to life and illuminating the life of Hirsch Jacobs, a man who started out racing pigeons, then racing horses, and then breeding horses. An unlikely boy from Brooklyn who really became a horse whisperer. He was the most successful horse trainer in his time; in fact he became a multi-millionaire, owning and breeding horses. Both he and Stymie passed away too soon. I thought it was interesting that his daughter Patrice married Louis Wolfson, the owners of Affirmed. This story touched my soul.
  • This one takes us on the incredible journey of a very poor boy training racing pigeons on rooftops to finding cheap racehorses, learning to bond with them, and training them into better racers.

This book never gets “dry”, so to speak, as it took me through the months and years Hirsch Jacobs trained and saddled well over 3000 winners, making not only a personal fortune, but even more importantly, carving out a lasting legacy in the tough, grueling world of thoroughbred racing.

    Well worth the read!
  • The real characters come to life on these pages. You feel as if you are right there with them. Having had some friends with interests in horse racing, this was very interesting. An article in the Wall Street Journal caused me to become interested in this book. Recommend it to anyone interested in the sport of horse racing!
  • If you enjoy history, you will appreciate the detail and broad background in the beginning of this book. Hang in there, it gets better! At first it's more about the main characters than it is about the horses, but it's important to know them. Who came in second to Seabiscuit? Who was in the background around that time and into the 1940's? The next great horse I remember is Secretariat in the 1970's, but who were the great horses before that? This book deserves to become a movie.
  • My husband is into horses and reading about them, so I bought this book at his request. I had finished the book I was reading so I picked this up a substitute. so glad I read this. IF you like history, you will very much enjoy this. If you like horses, that will double your enjoyment. The writing is excellent, smooth and it delivers.
  • Horses today do not have the stamina of the horses of this era. It's a great insight into the world of racing from the common man, common horse perspective.
